Test on your real website

What the Chrome extension does and what it doesn't do.

3 minutes read

On this page

Instrument a real website task using a compatible method.

Purpose

Observe how a participant carries out an assigned website task.

When to use it

When the interface is already on an accessible website.

Before you start

  • An HTTPS URL and defined task
  • Permission to install the tag or a compatible extension

Example

Find the returns policy and confirm when reaching its page.

Step by step

  1. Define the task. In the builder, click Add block and choose Website test. Under Task, enter Find the returns policy and provide the start URL. Under How the task is completed, choose Participant confirms for this example. Review the time limit and give-up setting. Returns policy · Start URL.
  1. Choose instrumentation. Under How the website is instrumented, choose Website tag if your team can install it; this supports mobile tests too. Choose UXTap Extension for Chrome or Edge on desktop. This task starts from the study link; to open questions inside your product, use the continuous research guide. Website tag · Extension.
  1. Install and verify. For a tag, under Tag installation, select Installed website or ask an administrator to create an installation for this origin. Click Copy and install it on the task pages. Click Test tag and check that it was found at the start URL. For the extension, follow the installation shown to participants. If a UXTap tag is already installed, select I already have a UXTap tag on this website and paste the current line; use the combined code without duplicating installation · After verification, republish the study.
  1. Rehearse the round trip. Publish in Share and open the public link on the test device. At the task, click Open website. Navigate to the policy and click I did it in the UXTap bar; return to the study tab and check progression. Preview does not open the website; this real test may consume quota. Goal reached · Return to study.
  1. Read available data. After completing the study, open Results, Questions and the Website test block. Review the outcome, Pages and Paths. Under Heatmap, select a page and inspect available clicks. The task tag does not provide a background image; extension screenshots depend on what was recorded. Tag without a background image · Extension according to available screenshots.

Validate before collecting responses

In the builder, Study preview applies draft groups, rules and screening without creating sessions or taking quota slots. For Figma tasks, websites and interviews, it shows Simulated answer to test logic: the author supplies the outcome; this does not demonstrate a real interaction.

Preview in new tab lets you check each block on desktop or mobile, including interactive Figma navigation and a simulated interview conversation. This block preview does not apply study skip rules.

To validate real websites, recording, voice and AI follow-up, publish and use Open link in new tab in Share. The published link opens a real participation at /r/[token]: it may create responses and consume quota. Keep this participation separate when analyzing collection.

How to read the result

  • Pages, clicks and task route
  • Screenshots only when the method produces them

Cautions and limitations

  • The test tag does not provide a page background image.
  • The extension may capture visible content in screenshots even without recording keystrokes.
  • Available installation does not replace testing in your audience’s browser.
