UXTap vs Maze: prototypes, interviews, and research operations

How to evaluate UXTap and Maze from the first test to the evidence archive: methods, recruitment, analysis, total cost, and a migration that preserves context.

UXTap and Maze enter the same conversation when a team wants to test an experience before investing in development. The choice becomes more demanding when research needs to continue after the first prototype: recruiting a different profile, investigating a difficulty in an interview, and showing the team why it's worth changing a screen.

Maze deserves attention when the operation requires different research modalities and an interview and recruitment structure. UXTap can fit when the work revolves around block-based studies, Portuguese language operation, and task-related evidence. The suitability depends on the plan and the flow you can execute with your own material.

What has changed in the comparison with Maze

Treating Maze only as a quick Figma testing tool leaves part of its offering out. The platform features prototype and website tests, questionnaires, moderated interviews, recruitment, and AI features. Its prototype documentation describes completion metrics, clicks outside interactive areas, time, paths, and reports.

There is also an AI moderation offering. It should be evaluated separately from interviews conducted by a person: commercial availability, accepted stimuli, and control over in-depth questions can change the possible use. It's not enough to find the word “AI” in the presentation of two platforms to conclude that the experiences are equivalent.

In UXTap, a study can combine prototype tasks, first click, five seconds, questions, preference, card sorting, and tree testing. There is an AI interview block, including screens, but this does not prove equivalence with a human interview operation with scheduling. This distinction should be included in the requirements before hiring.

A feature may exist in both columns and require different efforts. The relevant proof is being able to prepare, collect, interpret, and share the study within the foreseen conditions of use.

An onboarding pilot that exposes the differences

Imagine a management software that is redesigning the invitation of colleagues. The account owner needs to invite someone with limited access. The team wants to decide whether to keep permissions within the invitation or present them afterward.

The scenario could be: “A person will start collaborating on your project. Prepare access so they can follow the work without changing account settings.” Avoid mentioning the menu name or guiding which button to use. The objective is to observe the discovery of the path and the understanding of permissions.

Prepare an observable success condition

Choose the state that demonstrates completion: invitation prepared for the correct person and appropriate permission. Reaching the last screen without understanding the granted access can be navigation success and understanding failure. Record these dimensions separately.

In UXTap, the prototype mission accepts goals by screen arrival or by expected path. Use the path requirement only when traversing it is part of the research question. If different routes are legitimate, do not turn a valid shortcut into an error just because it diverges from the designer's script.

In Maze, check how the mission and results represent these same situations. The comparison between tools should start with the definition of the outcome, before looking at the rate presented on the dashboard.

Have the participant find the task

Use a stable version of Figma and test access as someone outside the team. Permissions, loading, scrolling, and returning from an intermediate screen are part of this rehearsal. The Figma usability test guide helps prepare the material.

In UXTap, consciously choose between Figma navigation, images with clickable areas, and guided flow. The latter serves to present screens in sequence and gather reactions; advancing by time or arrow does not demonstrate that the person discovered the navigation alone. End with a question that explains the action

After the attempt, ask what the person believes the invited guest will be able to do. Compare the explanation with the permission actually selected. You might find someone who completed quickly but granted more access than intended.

This result has a clear implication: the review should perhaps prioritize the permission description, even if the path to the invitation works. A useful test delivers this connection between behavior, interpretation, and decision.

Analysis needs to survive researcher turnover

Ask someone who did not set up the study to answer three questions: how many people attempted the activity, what was considered success, and what evidence justifies the main recommendation. If the answer depends on an extensive verbal explanation, investigate where the context was lost.

The same caution applies to AI. If a summary suggests “people don't understand permissions,” locate the reports that support the phrase, look for exceptions, and check the sample. Automatic analysis can help organize material; product priority still depends on context and judgment.

Recruitment: the part a license doesn't solve alone

In this example, account administrators face different decisions than those who merely receive invitations. Recruiting anyone who “uses software at work” can bring participants capable of executing clicks, but without experience with the studied responsibility.

Define behavior and context in screening: has the person already invited colleagues, chosen permissions, or reviewed accesses? Avoid revealing the desired answer in the question. The viability of the profile needs to be confirmed with the chosen audience.

Maze documents its panel and self-recruitment. For moderated interviews, the consulted documentation describes a specific panel operation. This is a concrete reason to evaluate the offering if human interviews are frequent in the routine.

In UXTap, receiving responses and hiring participants are separate parts. You can distribute the link to your base or configure identification and redirects from an external panel. How to estimate total cost without a false economy calculation

Compare a work period with the same number of rounds, the same profiles, and the same deliverables. A license that seems adequate for one study may not cover the quarterly routine.

Include in the calculation:

  • Software: required plan, quotas, AI features, export, and recording retention.
  • Participants: recruitment, incentives, screening, and eventual replacements.
  • Team: preparation, session review, synthesis, and presentation of findings.
  • Continuity: training, reconstruction of study models, and consultation of the archive.

In UXTap, plans are presented in BRL and AI features depend on plan enablement. In Maze, the commercial page distinguishes capabilities and packages; confirm essential items in writing. The price on the homepage, alone, does not demonstrate which option will be more economical for your operation.

Who should prioritize each candidate

Prioritize Maze evaluation if the decisive requirement is to combine tests and moderated interviews with organized recruitment in the same operation. Include in the pilot the transition between study, scheduling, session, and analysis. If the team already masters this flow and it meets the requirements, staying may avoid a migration without concrete benefit.

Prioritize UXTap evaluation if the challenge is to set up task studies with complementary questions, track evidence in Portuguese, and repeat rounds with a team that needs autonomy. Take a study to delivery; the existence of a Portuguese editor does not prove that the entire work will be simpler for everyone.

Maintain additional validation if camera, capture on a specific device, corporate integration, or contractual requirement are indispensable. In UXTap, screen recording depends on browser and device support; AI interviews and event-based replay have distinct purposes. Do not use one as a promise to replace the other.

Migrate one round before migrating team memory

Inventory what needs to survive: objective, script, prototype version, screening, results, permitted recordings, and decisions made. Export what is available on the source platform and record the relationship between each file and the corresponding study.

First, recreate a completed study and check if a person can understand the finding with the recovered material. Then, execute a new round in UXTap. There is no promise here of automatic import of Maze's history, nor of conversion of its indicators.

Frequently asked questions

Does UXTap replace all Maze features?

The evaluation needs to be done by workflow. There is overlap in testing and analysis, but an AI interview is not equivalent to human interview management. List mandatory requirements and prove each one in the intended plan and environment.

Which to choose for testing Figma only?

Both options are included in the evaluation. Use a real prototype, including scrolling and alternative routes, and compare mission configuration, participant experience, and reading of an unsuccessful session. This execution weighs more than the integration name.

Can I bring my participants?

UXTap allows sharing the link and integrating the flow of external panels. Maze also documents inviting your own audience. In both cases, plan selection, communication, and follow-up; providing a link does not solve these activities.

Which is cheaper for a Brazilian team?

There is no responsible answer without equivalent plan, volume, and recruitment. UXTap's billing in BRL may facilitate local planning, but it does not prove lower total cost. Also add analysis time, retention, AI, and migration.
