First Click Test: Discover Where the Task Begins

Learn how to use the first click to evaluate action discoverability and interpret chosen regions without extrapolating the result.

When a person receives an objective and looks at a screen, their first choice reveals an expectation about where the task begins. The first click test helps investigate this discoverability. It is especially useful when the team discusses the location of an action, the clarity of a menu, or the meaning of an element.

Choose a Question That Fits on One Screen

Imagine a fictional school portal. Guardians need to update the phone number used for emergency contacts. The team is unsure whether the task entry should be in “My profile” or “Student data”.

The test can show the portal's home screen and ask the person to indicate where they would start the update. This activity investigates the entry expectation. It does not prove that the subsequent flow will be completed.

If the question involves forms, validations, and confirmation, also plan a navigation task. Avoid asking the first click for a conclusion that depends on multiple steps.

Prepare the Stimulus Carefully

Use a legible image on the expected device. Maintain the necessary context to understand the screen, but remove elements that are not part of the evaluated proposal.

Before data collection, check if the participant sees the same crop that the researcher is analyzing. An action outside the visible area changes the task, especially on small screens.

Define How Regions Will Be Interpreted

Make a list of plausible entries. In the school example, clicking on “Student data” might make sense even if the current design expects “My profile”. This reveals an expectation that deserves investigation.

Define the regions of interest before consulting the complete result. If you redraw the criteria after seeing the clicks, record the change and treat the reading as exploratory.

An analysis table may contain:

  • Chosen region.
  • Number of participants who clicked on it.
  • Expectation suggested by the choice.
  • Question that still needs to be answered.

The third column contains interpretation, not direct access to the person's thoughts. A subsequent open-ended question can help verify this hypothesis.

Read Dispersion and Time Without Shortcuts

Scattered clicks may indicate several plausible entries or difficulty recognizing the action. Concentrated clicks also do not guarantee a good solution: a very prominent region can attract mistaken choices.

Time deserves the same care. A quick response can reflect clarity, familiarity, or haste. A delay can include careful reading of the scenario. Examine patterns alongside responses and test conditions.

Avoid turning a small difference into a universal rule. Keep the number of participants and the recruited profile visible.

Set Up a Proof of Payment Discoverability Test

Imagine a fictional application where a person needs to prove a payment already made. The screen shows balance, transactions, and shortcuts. Write the scenario with a need: “The company informed that it has not yet received the payment. Where would you start to find something that proves the transfer?”. Avoid mentioning the name of the shortcut the team expects to be chosen.

Prepare an image with fictional values and names, maintaining a density similar to the real situation. A list with only one transaction can make the task artificially easy. On the other hand, illegible text or a cropped capture can create a difficulty that belongs to the stimulus, not the screen organization.

Before data collection, describe regions of interest for reading: transfer item, proof of payment shortcut, help area, and other choices. This map is an analysis criterion; it does not need to appear to the participant. If two entries would lead to the document in the product, recognize both as plausible paths instead of favoring only the solution designed first.

Build a Table Beyond Colored Dots

When reviewing the result, record the initial choice, available time, eventual absence of response, and subsequent interpretation. If someone clicks on the transferred value, the team can investigate the expectation of opening the detail. If they click on the company name, they might expect to access that recipient's history. The position alone does not clarify this difference.

A useful subsequent question would be: “What did you expect to find after this click?”. Avoid “why didn't you use Proofs of Payment?”, which presents the expected path and assumes an error. Also preserve responses where the person says they don't know. These help distinguish a confident choice from a trial without reference.

Do not turn an entire region into a correct answer after observing the data. If you need to revise the criterion, document the reason and show how this change affects the reading. The team should be able to reconstruct what rule existed before the result and what was a subsequent interpretation.

When the Initial Choice Calls for Further Investigation

A first click concentrated on an appropriate entry can resolve the question about the start of the task. It will still be necessary to test continuity if the product requires selecting a period, identifying the transaction, or sharing the file. The Figma usability test allows planning this broader journey.

If clicks are divided between two plausible entries, examine whether the interface needs to offer contextual access in both. The solution might be an additional link, rather than eliminating one of the categories. If dispersion occurs mainly in a group with little familiarity, revise the vocabulary and the information needed to recognize the action.

Longer time also calls for caution. One person might read the list of transactions before choosing; another might quickly click on the first element that seems to work. Speed and decision quality are not equivalent. Compare only situations with compatible stimulus, instruction, and time limit, preserving the response base.

Convert Discovery into a Testable Change

If most plausible choices are in “Student data”, the team can test an entry there, revise the label, or offer a contextual shortcut. The best next action depends on the rest of the architecture.

Review and repeat the activity with people who have not learned the previous path, when the intention is to measure initial discoverability.

Does the method report the success rate of the complete flow?

No. It records where the person started the attempt on the presented stimulus. An appropriate start can lead to a subsequent failure, and an alternative entry can allow the task to be completed. Use initial discoverability to decide what to investigate in the complete journey, without turning one step into a measure of the entire experience.

Should I test the entire screen or just a component?

It depends on the question. An isolated component can help compare its understanding, but it removes competing options and clues from the rest of the page. To investigate where a person would start a real activity, maintain the necessary context so that choices similar to those in the product exist.

Does a click outside the expected region prove the label is bad?

Not necessarily. The person may have interpreted the scenario differently, used a valid entry, or encountered an image readability issue. Consult the justifications and material before attributing the result to the text. A label revision should be a testable hypothesis.
